Improving Your Design and Development Workflow with Subversion

August 08, 2008

Last month, A List Apart published my article Collaborate and Connect with Subversion, where I discussed how to use SVN to improve how you work with your small team and outside contractors. Now I want to take that show on the road.

OK, not really. But I do want to highlight the SXSW 2009 session I proposed:
Improving Your Design and Development Workflow with Subversion. Here’s my description:

Tired of zipping up files to send your changes to a co-worker or contractor? Learn how to integrate a powerful version control system into your workflow, improving the way you create and manage projects. Whether a designer, developer, front-end coder or an IA specialist: everyone can feel the Subversion love.

If you’d like to see this type of session at next year’s conference, I would be humbled if you voted for it. Voting is easy and only take a minute.

Perhaps “..with Version Control” would be a more apt title, considering it seems like everyone with the ability is moving to a DVCS of some sort.

    Just a though.

    Thanks.

This won’t be a general talk that just glosses over the topics. I want to focus in on a tool that everyone can start using right away that is tried and true—not the flavor of the month.

I like the idea of this, but (and I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times by now) I’m curious as to why you’re using Subversion as opposed to Git. Git is more conducive for collaboration in my opinion, with its ease of branching. What are the benefits you see for using Subversion?

I’m very happy to see you proposed this talk! I hope it makes the cut.

The benefits of SVN are that it’s widely used (Git isn’t, no matter what fanbois say), well-documented (books and articles) and it’s what I have personal experience using in a small team environment.

I’ve just commenced year 12 and need to come up with some ideas fast on any item that could do with improvement either in design or usability or technology. If you think of anything I would be very grateful..Thanks heaps
